Winterising your pool

Clean water at the end of the season

Header hivernage

At the end of the swimming season, follow BAYROL's routine for a more eco-friendly pool. This is a key step in your pool’s maintenance cycle because it needs care throughout the year, even during autumn and winter.

We’ll guide you through the best practices for end-of-season pool maintenance, as well as the two essential phases to follow, regardless of your pool type (in-ground or above-ground) or whether you use manual or automatic treatment (chlorine, bromine, active oxygen, or saltwater).

By doing so, you’ll maintain the quality of your water and equipment, making it easier to get your pool up and running again when the time comes.

The water in your pool is precious.

Take care of it now.

When and how

to organise your end-of-season routine?

When to winterise your pool?

  • It's AUTUMN and the swimming season is over. The water temperature is between 20°C and 15°C: follow PHASE 1 of the end-of-season routine.
  • It's WINTER and the water temperature is below 15°C: follow PHASE 2 of the end-of-season routine.

Should you empty your pool and/or lower the water level at the end of the season?

No, if possible, during the colder months, BAYROL advises against emptying your pool or lowering the water level. Instead, it's recommended to keep the filtration system running for a few hours each day. This is known as active or dynamic winterisation. You can follow the end-of-season pool care routine HERE.

If you prefer to stop the filtration and fully close your pool for the winter, follow phase 2 of the end-of-season pool care routine HERE.

Lower the water level below the return inlets*** to prevent any overflow caused by freezing. Fit winter plugs and floats to stop ice from forming. Finally, use a winter cover (or tarpaulin) to protect both the water and the structure of your pool throughout the winter months.
***unless otherwise specified by your pool installer or manufacturer.

Why use a winterising product for your pool?

Without using a winterising product, algae will develop, and the limescale that precipitates can damage your liner by staining it. To avoid this, you should use a winterising product for your pool.

Our winterising product, Puripool® Super, contains an anti-scale agent and an anti-algae agent to prevent the formation of scale and the development of algae. Puripool® Super is compatible with all treatments (bromine, chlorine, salt, active oxygen) and all filtration systems (sand/glass filters, cartridge filters, etc.).

      PHASE 1

It's AUTUMN and the swimming season is over. The water temperature is between 20°C and 15°C

      1. Leave the filtration running (the number of hours per day of filtration must be at least equal to the water temperature divided by 2) and continue to clean your pool regularly (skimmer basket, water line, etc.) and maintain the pH between 7.0 and 7.4. > Bordnet, pH-Minus.

      2. Maintain the disinfectant level using the automatic treatment or by adding Chlorilong POWER 5 long-lasting chlorine tablets.

      3. Add a winterising product to start preventing limescale deposits and algae growth right away. > Puripool® Super.

      PHASE 2

It's WINTER and the water temperature is below 15°C

      4. Thoroughly descale the filter. After at least 12 hours, wash and rinse the filter. > Decalcit Filter.

      5. Carry out a shock treatment with your regularly used product to eradicate all impurities. > Chloryte®, Chlorifix® or Chloriklar®.

      6. Finish the treatment by adding a second dose of winterising product to ensure complete protection of the water and equipment until you reopen your pool, leaving the filtration system running for around 4 hours a day*. > Puripool® Super.

*Important: leave the filtration system running for at least 4 hours a day, at times when the risk of frost is greatest.  During periods of frost, leave the filtration system running 24 hours a day to prevent ice forming in the pool's hydraulic system.

      PHASE 2 ALTERNATIVE

You want to turn off the filtration, by shutting down your pool.

      6. Lower the water level below the discharge nozzles**.
      7. Empty the pipes and drains, then close all the filter valves
      8. Fit wintering plugs and floats

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

At the end of the swimming season, how can you maintain the water in your pool?

The water in your pool is precious, so take care of it all year round, even in autumn and winter. Here are the golden rules for a successful end to the season:

  • Do not empty your pool or lower the water level
  • Leave the filter running for a few hours a day
  • Maintain the water with suitable products
  • Make it easy to restart the pool in the spring

When should I run my pool pump in winter? Should the filtration system be switched off at the end of the swimming season?

To ensure that the water and equipment are fully protected until the pool is restarted in spring, we recommend that you leave the filtration system running for at least 4 hours a day, at times when the risk of frost is greatest.

In the coldest regions or during periods of frost, we recommend leaving the filtration system running 24 hours a day. Continuous filtration will prevent ice forming in the pool's hydraulic circuit.

Winterising a salt pool: should the electrolysis system be switched off at the end of the season?

Winterising your salt pool is an essential step in the lifecycle of your pool. If you don't, you risk damaging the quality of your water, your pool and its electrolysis system.

Maintain the quality of your equipment and optimise its lifespan!

  • When temperatures fall below 15°C, your appliance Automatic SALT will switch itself off. Consult the user manual or refer to your manufacturer if necessary.
  • If you wish to close your pool completely, drain the cell of your electrolyser. After removing your measurement probes, store them in a conservation solution in a frost-free room.
